# PowHound > Ski snow forecast for 36 resorts in 15 regions. PowHound says when the snow starts and how much is untracked at first chair, instead of a 24-hour total that still contains yesterday's skied snow. Forecasts: Open-Meteo (CC BY 4.0). Observed: USDA SNOTEL snow pillows (West only; East and BC are forecast-only). Not a resort snow report. Forecasts pull every 2 hours; times are local to each resort. ## Clocks (local resort time) - First chair: 5pm yesterday to 8am. Untracked snow at the opener. - On hill: 8am to 5pm. Falls while you ski. - Skiable: first chair + on hill. Drives the day's call. - After hours: 5pm to midnight. Counts toward tomorrow's first chair. - Morning 8am to 1pm, afternoon 1pm to 5pm: a half-day lean only (Morning-heavy, Afternoon-heavy, Mixed), shown when on hill is 2" or more. ## Calls (skiable inches) - Stay home: under 2". - Nice day: 2" to under 8". Worth going if you are already free. - Full Send: 8" or more. ## Confidence (lead time, not accuracy of the tenths) - 1 day out or less: High. Timing is the useful part. - 2 days out: Medium. Totals still move. - 3+ days out: Low. The model misses real storms more than it invents them. ## Methodology (2025-26 backtest, West SNOTEL) - The 6am-6am "24h" report disagrees with the first-chair call 37% of the time. It is a different morning. - An overnight 6pm-6am window is already close to first chair (0.6" MAE on the same pillow). PowHound does not claim a better overnight forecast. - First chair vs on-hill majority: 0.79 hit rate. Morning vs afternoon lean: 0.67. - Same-day Stay / Nice / Full Send hit rate vs the pillow: about 0.42 against observed first chair, 0.25 against observed skiable. - The model runs shy: 24h total MAE 5.81", bias -5.8". Superseded live forecasts are not kept, so this is not the night-before forecast. - Pillow: SNOTEL snow depth, one reading a day around midnight. A ski day's gain is the next day's reading minus that day's (midnight to midnight). Depth is not snowfall: settling and wind make it read low. - A recap is a storm the model called (consecutive days, 4" skiable or more in total), October 1 through April 15. Pillow-only gains are counted on the archive, not paged.
